Latest Posts: How do you like it?

#1 » Post by Nyeriah » 25 May 2015 20:07

Greetings!

Lately we've been discussing a lot of things regarding our server and our website's design aiming at turning things more efficient. One of the recent discussions brought to us concerns the usage of the "latest posts" section at our front page.

Whilst we may have several suggestions that range from removing it entirely, showing only the latest thread post or displaying only the latest staff posts (like Blizzard does), we would like to first inquire how our users have been finding it useful in their daily browsing.

For those who never noticed it, this is how it looks to a new user:

And this is how retail displays them:

Now here goes the main questions:

How do you people use it daily?
Do you often check the front page to keep track of the latest posts as registered user?
Do you think there's any improvement that could be made?
Do you think it would be better if we made it a Staff post spotlight instead?

Thank you for your time!

Regards.

To be honest I never use the Latest post section, I think a staff post spotlight would be awesome.

I use it. When I'm online I refresh the page somewhat often to see if there's a new post. I only use see unread posts when I haven't checked for several hours.

Personally I use the latest posts section all the time, often come to the site (which is open among other tabs all the time) and refresh it just to see the newest posts. Sometimes I even forget to check updates on some threads only because I didn't catch them in the latest posts section.

I use it to keep track of new posts once I viewed the unread posts earlier that day.

A staff spotlight could be nice as long as it wouldn't contain all the 'Canned post" spams that happen every now and then :^)

You still have to deal with my canned messages so they would make absolutely no difference

By the way: if you check "view active topics" it should show the topics that had any activity on the given day even after they're already marked as read and got removed from the new topics list.

Meh. Refreshing the main page is easier if you're online.

That's interesting. I myself find no use of it whatsoever as I'm way more used to the forum tools and I find going to the front page rather inconvenient when I can just use the link from the top bar (yes I never check the front page as I never find a reason to). So honestly I thought Etro was the only one that ever used it for that, I mean, with the purpose of actually keeping track of threads.

In general I see that front-page as a landing ground for newcomers, so I doubted its usefulness for this solely given purpose.

i prefer active topics

and on another forum there is 'view your posts' it lets you keep track of topics you posted into, whenever a new post to that topic arrives it goes to the top. i use that more there
