[PW] Agony vs Doom

#1 » Post by Fitzpatrick » 26 May 2016 14:52

From some feedback I've received, I decided to do some closer testing of the overall DPS of Agony vs Doom. In the past, I've felt that Doom was a clear winner with both DPS and cast time advantages, but this review shows that the results are a little more nuanced.

Assumptions
Talents: 2/2 Improved CoA, 1/1 Amplify Curse, 5/5 Bane
Coefficients: Doom = 2.6, Agony = 1.7 (I've seen 1.6 listed, but testing showed it closer to 1.7 - I went with 1.6 to be generous)
Cast time: Doom = 1sec/60s, Agony = 2.5sec/60s
Shadow Bolt X: 2.5sec cast, 1.05 coefficient, base average damage = 550.
Ignoring mana usage as irrelevant
Ignoring spell crit of Shadowbolt for ease of calculations

Testing
Test 1: 0 spell power
CoA: ~1400dmg/24s = 58 DPS
CoD: ~3680dmg/60s = 61 DPS

Test 2: 435 spell power
CoA: ~2100dmg/24s = 87.5 DPS
CoD: ~4830dmg/60s = 80.5 DPS

Test 3: 693 spell power
CoA: 2592dmg/24s = 108 DPS
CoD: 5511dmg/60s = 92 DPS

So it is clear from this (non-extensive) testing that CoA starts to lead in DPS at easily reachable gear levels. However, this is ignoring the fact that for each minute CoA will require an extra 1.5s of casting. If we add 0.6 of a shadowbolt's damage to each CoD (1.5/2.5 = 0.6) then we can arrive at a more appropriate comparison. For Shadowbolt rank 10, damage added will be (0.6)(550+1.05(spell power))

0 spell power - CoD: 3680+330dmg/60s = 67 DPS (compared to CoAs 58 DPS)
435 spell power - CoD: 4830+600dmg/60s = 90.5 DPS (compared to CoAs 87.5 DPS)
693 spell power - CoD: 5511+750dmg/60s = 104 DPS (compared to CoAs 108 DPS)

So completely ignoring the ease of keeping up Shadow Embrace stacks and general ease-of-life of only having to cast once per minute compared to 2.5 times per minute, Curse of Agony begins to overcome Curse of Doom at higher gear levels. We can write an equation to find the exact point where the DPS/SP lines for Agony and Doom cross:

(1400+1.7x)/24 = [(3680+2.6x) + (0.6)(550+1.05x)]/60
where x = 500

Conclusions
So beginning at 500 spell power, Curse of Agony will overpower Doom in pure theorycrafting. However, they will remain relatively close. At 700 spell power, where the warlock will be doing perhaps 1200 overall DPS, there will be a difference between CoA and CoD of 4 DPS, or a ~1% overall difference.

As fights include more movement (Onyxia) and your crit rate increases, this point of crossing over to CoA will be at higher spell power values. Personally, I will probably continue to use CoD because 1) You will have more CoDs powered up by trinkets than CoAs, percentage-wise, and 2) its much easier to track a 60s DoT than a 24s one. The one change I may do is, in pure test-dummy fights like the drakes in BWL, and to better use my 1min30sec CD trinket, I will use the rotation of one trinketed CoD, 1 untrinketed CoA and then repeat as CD will have refreshed.

I was tempted to start a new thread but figured it would be just as good to post here. I've normally done second/third highest dps/dmg on most bosses out of the casters in our guild. I was in a ZG run with one of our newer locks with pretty bad gear and it has me wondering if I'm not doing my rotation optimally. He was doing 900+ dps consistently with maybe 430ish SP raid buffed.

I start with orc racial CoD/CoA, Corruption, Immo, then shadowbolt filler and switching to DS sub 25%. Keeping them up as they fall off trying to assure the last tick of damage happens with timers before refreshing.

Depending on fights I average 850-1k, if our tanks don't move too much for no reason as they sometimes do, and topping out 1100+ dps for spank and tank fights. I thought I was doing fine but a much lower geared lock getting the same and more has me questioning how.

Bloodvine, AQ20 ring, Rockfury, and D2 gloves with random blues just seems like near impossible to consistently get 900+ on bosses even in ZG.
