Jingitaxias' Warlock PvE Guide

#1 » Post by leamas03 » 04 Oct 2015 18:56

Greetings, mortals.
I'm writing this guide as a means to establish a baseline for Warlocks on this server. To start it's going to look ugly, but I'll work on it as I have time. Let's get the core things out of the way!

Your Role in Raids

Warlocks serve the role as ranged Damage Dealer (DD/DPS) in raids. Simple, right? As of the current state of the server they are top DPS on most fights throughout Molten Core, Zul'Gurub and Onyxia's Lair. Beyond that, they host a considerable amount of utility that puts them as a must bring to most raids.
Utility
[hide="Utility Spells"]AoE - Warlocks have two large AoE capable spells, Rain of Fire (RoF) and Hellfire (HF). Though typically you'll want to cast Corruption for small packs of mobs first before RoF'ing, and you'll typically not have the same DPS as a Mage, Boomkin or Hunter for big pulls, you'll still be able to hold your own.

Soulstone - Using one of your 32 soul shards allows you to prevent another raid member from death once for the following 15 minutes. Simple, effective, always have it up on a raid prio target except in cases where you're saving it.

Healthstone - Another soul shard mechanic, distribute these out to the raid as needed for tough encounters. Progression fights should almost always have lockcandy distributed out to members of the raid, though we don't have well, shards are not an issue. Raid leaders consider having a lock go 2/2 Improved Healthstone if you need the extra HP boost, though it typically won't be an issue.

Pets - We have four options to us at this moment; Imp, Succubus, Felhunter, Voidwalker. Though I haven't seen a lot of use out of Succubus or Voidwalkers in raids, Imp and Felhunter are both important. Felhunter should be your go to for single target damage. Combined with Improved Felhunter and Shadow Mastery your Felhound will keep your dps relevant at all stages. The imp, however, has one main use, which is boosting your raids HP for those health intensive fights. Raid leaders consider having one Warlock go 3/3 Improved Imp (discussed below in talent section) to maximize this benefit.

Curses - We get a lot here. Curse of Doom, Curse of Agony, Curse of Elements, Curse of Tongues, Curse of Weakness. I can go into a lot of detail about this subject, but a raid should always have one Warlock using Curse of Elements. Curse of Weakness is rather lackluster, Curse of Tongues is possibly worthwhile on some encounters, Curse of Doom should be used in conjunction with +spellpower on use trinkets and abilities (Blood Fury), and Curse of Agony will eventually out damage Curse of Doom (scales better)

Mobility - Because so much of our spells are instant cast (Corruption, Curses, Lifetap/Dark Pact, Shadowburn) we have a considerable amount time allowed to reposition ourselves. There are always opportunities to abuse this fact, so make sure to do so!

Mana Efficiency - We get two big spells here, Life Tap and Dark Pact. Life Tap will (with 2/2 Improved Life Tap) generate more mana than Dark Pact, but Dark Pact doesn't cost health. Make sure to remember Dark/Demonic Runes and Major Mana Potions as well as these don't use the Global Cool Down (GCD). I use mp5 food buffs as well, such as Nightfin Soup and Sagefish Delight.

Healer - Your healing in fights can rival Shadow Priests. Drain Life and Deathcoil are incredible! Just make sure to watch your threat early on in fights, and be careful when Deathcoiling trash mobs. You don't want them fearing into extra mobs! Remember to rely on your healers for the most part, but recognize when their healing or mana is low, or when they must prioritize other targets. Usually we'll use Deathcoil in response to 2-3 Life Taps or big damage. Remember your Shadow Ward spell as well! It's useful on fights with big shadow raid damage.

Crowd Control - Banish and Fears. Both have their important moments. Coordinate with your raid to figure out appropriate timing.

Summon - Summoning. Nothing really new here, drop a stone with two additional people, summon with one additional.[/hide]
Damage

[hide="Damage Spells"]There's so much to discuss here. For now I'll stick to the basics. For the purposes of this guide I'll be covering our standard, Affliction based build.

Corruption - Instant cast, 1.5s GCD, Damge over Time (DoT), bread and butter spell. This will compose ~20-30% of your damage. Several talents improve this spell. Shadow spell damage.

Curse of Agony - Instant cast, 1s GCD, DoT. Lasts 24s. Use after corruption on any mob that dies within a minute. Scales higher than Curse of Doom eventually.

Curse of Doom - Instant cast, 1s GCD, DoT. Lasts 60s. Use after corruption on boss encounters or mobs that take more than 60s. Snapshot with a +spellpower effect for maximum efficiency.

Immolate - 1.5s cast, Direct Damage (DD) and DoT. ~10% of our damage, still relevant for us shadow based casters. Gets lower priority than Corruption or Curses, but does more damage overall than Shadowbolt for it's cast time.Use after Corruption and Curse.

Shadowbolt - 2.5s cast, DD. ~50-60% of our damage. Applies Shadow Embrace, further amplifying our DoT's. Remember to keep 3/3 Shadow Embrace up (after DoTs). This will be our main spell for good reason. It's a ton of damage.

Shadowburn - Instant cast, DD, 20yd range. Great for mobility intense fights, but it is not better than Shadowbolt for our filler spell.

Rain of Fire - 8s channeled, Area of Effect (AoE). Use for large packs of mobs. Affected by AoE cap.

Hellfire - 15s channeled, AoE. Big damage, damages self, low range. Remember this spell exists.[/hide]

Talent Builds

I'm going to link two builds here, but there is a slight amount of freedom with the second spec.

Affliction + Felhunter - This is my current raiding spec. The single point in Shadowburn is partially open, it's situationally used on some fights. Otherwise this spec is about making the most of your felhunter's damage as well as big damage from DoT's, and finally Shadow Bolt as a filler.
http://www.truewow.org/armory/talentcal ... ,0,0,0,0,0

Affliction + Imp - This is a spec I use for locks assigned to Imp + CoE duties in raid. Your damage is typically low, but you get the core things you'd want in this build. Mostly improved imp. There's a floating 2 points that can be placed wherever you need. Commonly I have Imp on Phase Shift mode as it has to stay alive for the tank. Be careful not to die yourself, what with those lifetaps!
http://www.truewow.org/armory/talentcal ... ,0,0,0,0,0

Imp.Imp - This one's kind of experimental. The idea is that you'll keep your Imp out (still on CoE duties as well) but instead use your Imp as a strong damage component. You'll have to Lifetap a lot for both you and your minion's mana. Also, you get that big Spellstone buff giving you a ton of haste. If you think Crit is more worthwhile feel free to use the critstone. Again, this is not fully tested.
http://www.truewow.org/armory/talentcal ... ,0,0,0,0,0

Race Choice

Presently we have the option to play as Human, Gnome, Orc and Undead.

Human - Bonus to Spirit and Reputation gains, PvP bonuses for scouting invisible units and, of course, breaking CC. CC break is useful on some fights (Magmadar) but it's still fringe, This is situational at best, and not the most optimal spec for PvE.

Gnome - Bonus to Intellect, snare break. PvP uses, again, but nothing for PvE.

Orc - On use Spell Power that works perfectly for Curse of Doom snapshotting, bonus to pet damage (5%), stun resist... Orcs get the best deal. If you're looking for the best PvE race, pick Orcs and don't look back.

Undead - Fear break. Great in PvP, esp against sPriest/Lock. Useful against Magmadar. Useless in PvE, elsewise.

Attunements

MC Attunement - Currently MC attunement is not a requirement on this server.
http://wowwiki.wikia.com/wiki/Quest:Att ... o_the_Core

Onyxia Attunement -
For Horde:
Start with the following questline. It will require running UBRS several times, so feel free to do it across multiple times. Note that for the dragon killing portion you will need a party to continue.
http://wowwiki.wikia.com/wiki/Quest:Warlord%27s_Command

For Alliance:
Please visit the following link. I know nothing about Alliance attunement.

Naxx Attunement:

Stat Priority

Spell Power - Big, normal, impacts all of our damage.
Hit - Cap is 17%! 8 hit = 1% hit. We get 3% from talents meaning 112 (14%) is our soft hit cap. This is easily obtainable with preraid gear, so get used to it. I generally weight hit to be around 1.8 spell power, but your priority needs to be 17% for efficiency (or else you'll have to re-apply shadow embrace stacks mid fight). Keep in mind that unlike other classes Warlocks are able to benefit somewhat from exceeding Hit Cap. Our Felhunter can hit more often with higher levels of Hit. Still, this is not something you should itemize around.
Crit - The only spells that crit are Shadow Bolt, Immolate and Shadowburn. Still, this is damn useful. I generally undervalue crit, but you'll have a lot of it anyway, especially if you get world buffs. I recommend ~14 crit being worth about 10 spell power. This could still use testing all around. Feel free to play with it within reason.
Haste - We don't get a lot of haste (maybe 1% from head/legs enchant, and 3% from spellstone). Still, having it is nice. I suppose we'll revisit this at 70.
Intellect - Gives crit in small amounts, so it's not completely worthless.

[hide="
Preraid BiS
"]Head - Spellweaver's Turban (UBRS)
Neck - Diana's Pearl Necklace (Strat Live), Orb of the Darkmoon (DMF)
Shoulders - Boreal Mantle (BRD)
Cloak - Hide of the Wild (crafted)
Chest - Bloodvine Vest (crafted), Robes of the Archmage (crafted)
Wrist - Funeral Cuffs (LBRS), Dryad's Wrist Bindings (PvP)
Hands - Deathmist Wraps (dungeon 1), Desert Bloom Gloves (Silithus quest)

Belt - Ban'thok Sash (BRD Arena), Chloromesh Girdle (Maraudon)
Legs - Bloodvine Leggings (crafted)
Boots - Bloodvine Boots (crafted)
Ring1 - Fordring's Seal (quest)
Ring2 - Flaming Band (UBRS), Seal of Ascension (Quest)
Trinket1 - High-Powered Flashlight (crafted)
Trinket2 - Mark of Resolution (quest), Briarwood Reed (UBRS)
Wand - Serpentine Skuller (UBRS), X wand of Shadow Wrath (21 shadow damage version, world drop)

2h Weapon - Soul Harvester

1h Weapons - Sageblade (crafted), Mindfang (PvP)
Offhand - Brightly Glowing Stone (Dire Maul North), Tome of Fiery Arcana (PvP)

I decided to include some of the PvP items in this list as well since they are very good. Mindfang and Tome of Fiery Arcana both require about two week's worth of arena points. Dryad's Wrist Bindings require honor grinding.[/hide]

Enchants

+10 haste to head (Libram of Rapidity)

+5 resistances to shoulders (later upgraded to +18sp post ZG exalted)
+4 stats to chest
+15 spellpower to wrist
+10 haste to gloves
+10 haste to legs (Libram of Rapidity) (later upgraded to 18sp with ZG idols)
+5 hit to boots (or minor speed depending on gear needs)
+30 spellpower to weapon

In ZG you'll get replacement enchants for shoulders, legs and helm.

[hide="Quest Upgrades"]Mark of Resolution - This Trinket is fantastic for reaching hit cap. Interestingly there's a small game to play with items that give 10 hit over 8 hit. If you're looking at this possibly itemization, consider also +5 hit to boots. This quest chain takes about half an hour. The boss can be solo'd, and LoS'ing is your friend.
Fordring's Seal - This ring works better than Maiden's Circle. What else do you want to know? The quest chain will take about two hours and has you run through Strat Live. Currently the last quest can be completed using Quest Completer.
Deathmist Wraps - This whole chain requires a bit of gold, but takes only about an hour or so. The gloves are an excellent preraid method of getting +8 hit. If you don't go with this option your next option is down in Silithus for 27 spell power hands. This other quest, however, takes about the same time (if not slightly longer) and cannot be solo'd.[/hide]

[hide="MC Upgrades"]Ring of Spell Power, Sorcerious dagger (incredibly marginal), Talisman of Epheremal Power (situational, please see section on Snapshotting below), Mana Igniting Cord, Staff of Dominance (marginal), Azuresong Mageblade, Sash of Whispered Secrets, Cauterizing Band, Choker of the Firelord, Band of Accuria (will not be prio'd to you, still amazing to beg for)

Your top priorities from this list are Azuresong Mageblade, Choker of the Firelord, Mana Igniting Cord and Ring of Spell Power. If all of your melee miraculously already have Band of Accuria and you are really good at D.S.T. then hey, good luck.[/hide]

[hide="Onyxia's Lair Upgrades"]Onyxia Tooth Pendant

Technically it's an upgrade assuming you can still hit 17% hit with it. Most raids the Head of Onyxia will be looted to tanks or melee. Much like Band of Accuria this item is actually better than Prebis for most caster dps. This should likely go to an sPriest or Boomkin over our class, but it's still pretty to drool at.[/hide]

[hide="Zul'Gurub Upgrades"]Sets:
Zanzil's Band + Zanzil's Seal (3% hit, 17sp) - affects our itemization, primarily useful for a warlock that has heavy SP items such as Mana Igniting Cord or Choker of the Firelord and needs the hit. Will likely prio to sPriest/Boomkin for the mp5.
Zandalar Demoniac's Wraps + Zandalar Demoniac's Mantle (40sp, lots of stam) - Heavy amount of flat spell power if you're not excited about running shadow wrath shoulders. Consider getting Warsong Bracers (22sp) and some other shoulders as time progresses. Also note that bracers will be replaced immediately and forever with Rockfury Bracers. This 2p set doubles as PvP gear, so understand that it is important for more than just PvE.

Single Items
Betrayer's Boots - It's a sidegrade, not intended for main boss DPS. This is used for trash pulls what with the high spell power.
Arlokk's Hoodoo Stick - Useful for raiders that simply won't PvP for AV off hand.
Jin'do's Evil Eye - Solid for PvP, slightly better than DMF neck, only used when above hit cap.
Jin'do's Bag of Whammies - Another meta choice dependent on itemization and where you sit with hit. Point for point not better than AV off hand, still a solid choice.
Jin'do's Judgement - Useful, better for sPriests and Boomkins.
Bloodtinged Gloves - Best hit based gloves available up til this point. I believe the best alternative is PvP gloves + shoulder alternative.
Cloak of Consumption - Will not be replaced until C'thun dies. Get this as soon as possible.
Zandalarian Hero Charm - Very potent and works very favorably with snapshotting Curse of Doom + Blood Fury (orc racial). It drops every time so make sure to pester raid leaders for this.
Touch of Chaos - Replaces Bonecreeper Stylus, but is about even point for point. Another option if you're slightly over hit and want more option.
Bloodcaller - Weaker than Arathi Basin's Mindfang, still really good. Consider if this is really a priority item for you.
Band of Servitude - Similar to MC's Cauterizing Band, this item is technically better than PreBiS, albeit slightly.
Belt of Untapped Power - Surprisingly really good. Use it until you're able to snag Mana Igniting Cord.
Cloak of Hakkari Worshippers - Replaces Hide of the Wild, but is only a slight upgrade. It goes really well with ZG shoulders, though.[/hide]

[hide="Blackwing Lair Upgrades"]Mantle of the Blackwing Cabal - Our first real shoulders! Rejoice!
The Black Book - It'll be interesting to see how well or terribly this works. My money's on it being trash, except for the really short MC bosses.
Nemesis Belt - A tier piece that's good!? Yeah, sure enough. Plus we'll use this for our SR set against Twin Emps.
Bracers of Arcane Accuracy - Get it during BWL, sure. As soon as Rockfury Bracers get released however, these are dumpstered. Get that Rockfury grind going.
Maladath, Runed Blade of the Black Flight - RP set, spend all your DKP on it.
Nemesis Gloves - Another tier piece that works quite well. This, the belt, and one more makes us a 3p set bonus for +23 spell power.
Firemaw's Clutch - An upgrade vs preraid, but will be prio'd to healers because of the mp5. Still, pretty to look at.
Band of Forced Concentration - Best ring up til this point in the game, works well with Band of Spell Power in the other slot. Again, re-organize around your hit cap.
Shadow Wing Focus Staff - If you PvP at all you have better options. If you don't PvP at all consider taking this.
Nemesis Spaulders - A third tier piece that works well. If you were previously using ZG 2p drop that, get stronger bracers (Rockfury > Arcane Accuracy > WSG), and you've got a 3p set worth a damn.
Angelista's Grasp - Worse than T2 belt, better than our Preraid options. Very marginal, if you're a low-DPS warlock consistently you'll get this. Outside of that, it's just not good.
Empowered Leggings - Finally, a piece that makes us consider dropping 3p Bloodvine. This item will be sought after by almost all caster classes, including healing Priests and Druids.
Claw of Chromaggus - While technically very good, this item will be prio'd to sPriests and possibly Boomkins.
Mish'undare, Circlet of the Mind Flayer - Another massive item, this breaks down Spellweaver's Turban. Remember to re-organize your hit as necessary.
Neltharion's Tear - *salivating*
Staff of the Shadow Flame - Better than PvP so far unless you are strong enough to get High Warlord/General items. Very strong indeed.
Master Dragonslayer's Orb - Oddly enough this is more for PvPers than for raiders. Raiders get AV offhand, which is better. Go figure.
Band of Dark Dominion - Another item for PvPer's, and oddly sitting around the power level of Cauterizing Band.
Ringo's Blizzard Boots - The item alongside Empowered Leggings that allows us to consider dropping 3p Bloodvine. I recommend only doing this combo if you can snatch a Neltharion's Tear, as well.[/hide]

[hide="Ahn'Qiraj 20 Upgrades"]Fury of the Forgotten Swarm - Very small upgrade that will likely go to a melee class first.
Talon of Furious Concentration - Actually, very good. This is the first item to compete with AV off hand at a reasonable level.
Mantle of Maz'Nadir - Slightly better than PreBiS.
Ring of the Desert Winds - Better than PreBiS, prio'd to healers first.
Leggings of the Black Blizzard - Competes with Empowered Leggings. We want this item more than Empowered Leggings, but both will perform about as well in PvE.
Staff of the Ruins - Solid choice, better than most options up until AQ40.
Kris of Unspoken Names - Very solid choice for a weapon, works well with 3p AQ set and AV off hand.
Shroud of Unspoken Names - More for PvP purposes, but possibly better than Hide of the Wild in PvE if you use this 3p set.
Ring of Unspoken Names - Incredibly good. You want this as soon as possible.

A quick reminder about AQ20; it drops more enchantments! We will likely be using Enchant Gloves: Healing Power over Shadow Power simply because we use Immolate in our rotation. If you don't use Immolate for whatever reason, go Shadow Power. Also, depending on how threat ends up looking later on, we may consider using +Stealth (decreased threat) to cloak.[/hide]

[hide="Ahn'Qiraj 40 Upgrades"]Blessed Qiraji Acolyte Staff - Fantastic weapon. Consider other options first, including postponing heavy weapon upgrades until deeper into Naxx/AQ.
Ring of Swarming Thought - Solid, again, around the power level of Cauterizing Band. This is really useful in PvP, however.
Staff of Qiraji Prophets - Nexus Crystal
Ukko's Ring of Darkness - Used on Twin Emps for the Stam and Shadow Resistance.
Wand of Qiraji Nobility - Better than Bonecreeper Stylus point for point and hits like a freight train.
Mantle of Phrenic Power - Solid Shoulders, though 3p T2 is a better set.
Recomposed Boots - Used for Viscidus encounter (Nature Resist)
Cloak of Untold Secrets - Used on Twin Emps for the Stam and Shadow Resistance.
Sharpened Silithid Femur - Finally, an item that competes with High Warlord dagger. Claim this before the Mages.
Royal Scepter of Vek'lor - Brilliant. Hit, Crit, Spell power... This is everything we want.
Amulet of Vek'nilash - More potent than Choker of the Firelord what with that crit.
Garb of Royal Ascension - Used on Twin Emps for the Stam and Shadow Resistance. Also really good for breaking 3p Bloodvine.
Ritssyn's Ring of Chaos - If you don't want two hit rings for whatever reason consider this.
Shard of the Fallen Star - This will need some testing, but may be pretty fun in PvP. Potentially useful in PvE, too.
Red Qiraji Resonating Crystal - Better red than dead.
Ring of the Fallen God - *drool*
Cloak of the Devoured - *drool*
Dark Storm Gauntlets - *drool*
Eyestalk Waist Cord - *drool*
Yes, there are that many fantastic items on C'thun. In fact, this is a huge instance for all casters. I fully expect casters to scale incredibly well here.[/hide]

No problem! Let me know if you see anything to add to the guide. Admittedly it's still a work in progress at the moment. ._.

Bumping thread, also updated with information regarding itemization well into AQ40, as well as formatted more neatly.

Thanks for the guide Jingitaxias!

This will prove very useful to all warlocks on the server, willing to check the forum and learn more about their class and itemization.
I have not had the time yet to inspect every detail, the 1 thing that caught my eye would be the pre raid bis 2h recommendation...

In my opinion:
Soul Harvester (http://www.primalwow.org/armory/item.php?item=20536)
is better than
Rod of the Ogre Magi (http://www.primalwow.org/armory/item.php?item=18534)
since you most likely don’t have 14% hit yet.

Keep up the good work, ill post replys if i have any more recomendations.

I would also recomend adding aliance equivalents of the faction specific items you listed, to spare people the time of searching online.

The one i have noticed was Mindfang.
The alliance equivalent is Sageclaw (http://www.primalwow.org/armory/item.php?item=20070)

There could be more, but this one cought my eye.

Cheers!

The mainhand dagger only takes about three weeks of 5v5s to get, really a decent time investment versus the erratic spawn times of Azuregos. The fang of the mystics favors healers as they'll use it longer into content than a warlock.

Lokamir or Claw of Chromaggus > Fang of Mystics (assuming you can use maces and don't over-value crit like a poophead)

But you're under the assumption that every player will have access to that item. AQ20 Hilt weapon, Mindfang are both things you are almost guaranteed to have access to.
