How to Disco my way (2s focused)

#1 » Post by bloodsugar » 06 Apr 2016 01:18

DISCLAIMER- I am using my personal knowledge of class that I collected throughout the years of playing, reading guides, watching other ppl play, and accepting advices i got from players i met. No google guides were copied, everything written here is my personal experience!

Alright boiz and gurls of TW, what you are about to read is my very first guide, EVER, so i'd like you to give any feedback, such as correction in grammar, spelling, and most importantly corrections and/or suggestions for guide itself.
First of all, let me introduce... I am Aleksandar, a student of psychology, and long time standing WoW player. I started of my WoW carrier on Wrath of the lich king expansion, (which was 6-7 years ago) and as it looks , i might even end it right there...
I started playing discipline priest (hereinafter disco) 3-4 years ago. I created it specifically for PvP, more specifically for 2v2 arenas (it was kind of a deal with my friend who played rogue and who retired when our old server was about to shut down). Ill just skip leveling part, because i didnt enjoy it at all, and even considered quitting priest, but i endured. So i started gearing up, got my basic set, and i was ready to go... At start it didnt go quite good, since i had no knowledge of disco, and really low knowledge of PvP itself, but i started to enjoy playing it with every arena match (wether it was a win or loss). I guess its worth mentioning that i got to 2.2k (roughly, no achive :<) couple of times, with only Furious gear.
So lets start...
Here u can find an armory link to my Disco: http://www.truewow.org/armory/character ... m=&realm=t
The current talent tree IS NOT the one i use usually, its made in rush since i play both PvP and Pve, and im respecing every time i want to do one or another.
Disco priest is considered one of the best healers for arena... Now you are supposed to ask why? Well, ill tell you. Disco priests have huuuuge amount of tools to outplay, outsmart and beat opponent, IF PLAYED WELL! His sustain, utility and damage(yes u read it just fine) allows him to take the title of best arena healer in WotLK (IMO). You have quite some kit in your pocket, that if you learn to control, can get u really high on arena ladder.

GUIDE CONTENT
*Race choice
*Talend build(s) and glyphs
*Stat priorities
*Gear
*Gems and Enchants
*Proffesion preferances
*Tips&Tricks and Useful macros

RACE CHOICE
Basically it up to you, i myself prefer undead, because of racial, Will of the Forsaken, which is one of the best racials for pvp ingame. Bloodelf (not male please) is also good choice, Arcane Torrent will bring you some mana back, and can be used to Interrupt /silence enemys important spellcast. I personally dislike humans, yes, racial is awesome, yes u can use another pve trinket, but you will lose shitload of resilliance that Medallion provides. So yea, Undead is the way to go :D

TALENTS AND GLYPHS
First of all, i want to say that disco talent tree is really flexible, and adaptable to various types of playstyles. According to that, you can either play passively, or aggressively depending on your own preferance, or even on your team mates class.

This is example of talent tree for players that want to sit back, manaburn and outsustain enemy:
http://wotlk.openwow.com/talent#bxcMuhGVRIosfRtbEzc
You can choose whether u want to play with Inner Focus or without it. It can be a lifesaver in some situations. For example u are going oom, your partner is getting bursted down, what do you do? Shield him! After he stops dropping run out of range of any cc/interrupt (preferably behind nearest wall),shield yourself and combo it with your Divine Hymn, while not wasting a single manapoint. Why is shielding yourself before starting channeling Hymn, well you happen to play against any point&click aoe user such as Mage, Warlock, DK, they will drop their aoe behind wall and reduce amount of ticks of your Hymn.
You can also remove 2 talent points from Spell Warding, and put it in Silent Resolve, another very useful talent for discipline priest since it prevents ur shields and other trash buffs to be dispelled. While your Pain Suppresion is active , there is a very little chance anything will be dispelled of your target.
If you like, these 2 talent points can be spent in Improved Power Word: Fortitude, not because it improves your buff, it wil get dispelled 90% of your arena matches, but because of 4% total stamina increase. Comes handy since u are really squishy due to wearing cloth armor. Moving 2 points from Holy Specialization is also a good choice, you can put it elsewhere, its up to you.

Glyphs are also pretty flexible, with an exception to PW:S glpyh. I use these:
*Glyph of Power Word: Shield
*Glyph of Pain Suppresion
*Glyph of Penance
Glyph of Inner Fire is very viable choise, as it will allow you to survive longer against those lolstorm warriors, sneaky rogues, and all other physical damage dealers. You can replace it with either Penance or Pain Suppresion.

The other version of spec, is aggressive talent tree aka Smite spec:
http://wotlk.openwow.com/talent#bxcMhhGVRIosfktbxtc0b
This build is for advanced players with good coordination of cc, resets, positioning etc etc...
I prefer playing this spec with rogues and frost mages, since then, u will have huge amount of cc, and you can in most cases win games on opener, again, if played well.
Most important glyph for this is Glyph of Smite, which allows you to deal 20% additional damage with your Smite ability while enemy is affected with Holy Fire debuff and + 10 % from Searing Light talent. Pretty awesome ha?

So to sum it up:
*Glyph of Smite (Mandatory)
*Glyph of Power Word: Shield
*Glyph of Inner fire ( i prefer this one over pain suppresion, since u will need to be able to survive in order to deal any dmg)
Glyph of Penance is also a viable choice. Its up to you. :)

STAT PRIORITIES
Without certain caps, u wont be able to do various things, for example if u are not hit capped your fear WILL miss, which can decide wether u win or lose an arena match. Stat priorities go like this:
HIT cap> Spell penetration> Spell power> MP5>Haste> Resilliance

*Hit cap for disco priest is 6%, this will prevent you from missing any spells including your fear, DoTs , and other offensive abilities.
*Spell penetration- I personally use 75 myself (not at the moment of writing tho, i think spell pene got fixed during my WoW break, and i intend to cap it once i start playing PvP again). This stat is really important , so your Shadow spells (mainly shadow) dont get resisted. E.g. Fear and Mind Control are your only cc, and can be resisted if not spell pene capped.
*Spell power- This stat will increase your healing, shielding, and damage done, simple as that. The more u have , the more your shields will absorb, and more damage you will do to help out bursting down targets. Your goal is to reach 3000 spell power, more-less, without Inner Fire buff. This is something we call '' Spell power cap'' even tho there is no such a thing for a spell power stat. The more you have the better it is.
*MP5- This stat is debatable. I've seen people using spirit instead, which i dont recommend, since MP5 will regenerate your mana while casting, while with Spirit you will have to stop casting in order to get mana back. Spirit itself gives Mana per 5 seconds as well, but not very considerable amount which makes it not as viable as pure MP5.
*Haste- This stat is very important as well, do not neglect its power, as it will reduce cast AND channeling time of your spells, and also your global cooldown. I personally use 500-600 haste , and it works like a charm.
*Resilliance- basically, its your best defensive stat, it will reduce chance to be critically hit, mana drained, and in addition provides pure damage reduction to all damage done to you. Aint that awesome ? Yea it would be if it worked properly. Im not an expert, didnt check which part of it doesnt work, but is still a must to have for pvp.

GEAR, GEMS AND ENCHANTS
In order to get endgame gear, you will need to play 2v2 rated arena, and thats where fun is (SCREW BGs). Gear im presenting is, my personal choice, as it has perfectly balanced stats matching my playstyle.

--GEAR

*Head- http://wotlk.openwow.com/item=51484

*Neck- http://wotlk.openwow.com/item=51347

*Shoulders- http://wotlk.openwow.com/item=51573 or http://wotlk.openwow.com/item=50643. Wrathful shoulders are mostly for show-offing, as it will just make u lose hit/haste just to give u some spirit. I dont give a damn about wfsholds, since i wouldnt even use them, so why bother :D

*Back- http://wotlk.openwow.com/item=51346

*Chest- http://wotlk.openwow.com/item=51482

*Wrist- http://wotlk.openwow.com/item=51339

*Main hand- http://wotlk.openwow.com/item=51453 or http://wotlk.openwow.com/item=51406

*Off-hand- http://wotlk.openwow.com/item=51407

*Ranged- http://wotlk.openwow.com/item=51852 or http://wotlk.openwow.com/item=51531 (Spell penetration one, not sure if the link is good) if u are able to get hit cap, and/or want to spare gemslots for other stat

* Hands- http://wotlk.openwow.com/item=51483

*Belt- http://wotlk.openwow.com/item=51930 or http://wotlk.openwow.com/item=51337

*Legs- http://wotlk.openwow.com/item=51483

*Boots- http://wotlk.openwow.com/item=51338

Regarding to rings and trinkets there are several viable choices, i will mention couple of them. You can use Ashen Verdict rings both with hit or mp5 depending what your gear lacks. My personal choice would be

*Ring combo 1 - http://wotlk.openwow.com/item=50714 AND http://wotlk.openwow.com/item=50400
*Ring combo 2 - http://wotlk.openwow.com/item=50398 AND http://wotlk.openwow.com/item=50610 or Ring of Phased Regeneration (RS 25hc)

*Trinkets- http://wotlk.openwow.com/item=50726 AND http://wotlk.openwow.com/item=51378 However, there are several very much viable choices for second trinket instead of Bauble. Those are

--ENCHANTS
*Head : Arcanum of Dominance - Permanently adds 29 spell power and 20 resilience rating to a head slot item.
*Shoulder : Inscription of Dominance - Permanently adds 23 spell power and 15 resilience rating to a shoulder slot item.
*Chest : Enchant Chest - Exceptional Resilience - Permanently enchant chest armor to increase resilience rating by 20.
*Cloak : Enchant Cloak - Spell Piercing - Permanently enchant a cloak to increase spell penetration by 35. OR Scroll of Enchant Cloak - Greater Speed - Permanently enchants a cloak to increase haste rating by 23.
*Weapon : ( 1H ) - Enchant Weapon - Mighty Spellpower - Permanently enchant a melee weapon to increase spell power by 63.
*Boots : Enchant Boots - Tuskarr's Vitality - Permanently enchants boots to give a minor movement speed increase (8%) and 15 Stamina.
*Belt : Eternal Belt Buckle - Permanently attach an eternal belt buckle onto a belt, adding a socket to the belt.
*Glove : Enchant Gloves - Exceptional Spellpower - Permanently enchant gloves to increase spell power by 28.
*Bracer : Enchant Bracers - Superior Spellpower - Permanently enchant bracers to increase spell power by 30.
*Leggings : Sapphire Spellthread - Permanently embroiders spellthread into pants, increasing spell power by 50 and Stamina by 30.
*Rings: (ENCHANTERS ONLY) I recommend using enchanting on priest.

--GEMS

Geming discipline priest is mostly gap filling job...You have to balance stats , so they fit ur playstyle, while reaching important caps. Here are some of sockets i have on my priest:
* 23 Spell Power
* 10 haste + 5mp5
* 12 Spell Power + 10 haste
* 20 Resilience
* 12 Spell power + 10 Resilience

My priest has jewelcrafting, and im using 34 Resilience gems in order to conpensate resilience loss due to using couple PvE parts. However if u have no idea how to reach spell pene cap, you can use 1x 43 Spell pene and Wrathful Wand with spell pene, that should do , for disco :)

PROFFESIONS

To be honest, any proffesion can work. However there are few that are simply better than others. I prefer using Jewelcrafting and Enchanting. Engineering is also very good, so is Tailoring. Herbalism gives a 2 min CD heal, and i'd say its not worth the effort.

USEFUL MACROS

This section is mostly a reminder, since everyone can google macro right?
However , there are several macros that are proven to be VERY useful and i will list some of them:
*Mouseover MC
#showtooltip Mind Control
/cast [target=mouseover] Mind Control

I have MC binded on one of my additional mouse keys, and it really useful to just mouseover click without even losing ur current target. Mouseover macros can also be used with Gladius addon, which is like mandatory for arena, except if u are oldschool and playing without any addons.

*Power Infusion
/cast [target=charname] Power infusion
/y Burn baby burn
You can change name depending on if u are playing with caster or not. Really useful when trying to burst target down, u dont even need to change targets to cast it.

*Shadow Word: Death
/cast [target=focus] Shadow Word: Death
If you are playing against annoying polymorph spamming mages, you will need this one for sure. However, a good mage will fakecast poly until he baits SW:D from you... Be careful with that. Also can be used to break Blind, Repetance,Succubus cc, Scatter shot (even trap if hunter dosnt set it fast enough). For these instant cc spells, u will need to practise your positioning, as well as their range...If u keep distance , they will (in most cases) try to run to you for Repentance/Blind, you just wait for it ... With hunter's scattershot, it is actually hard, since u will have to predict when hes about to scatter you, so better LoS them 24/7.

*Fear Ward
/target <charname>
/cast fear ward
/targetlasttarget

This is how this macro is useful, u see another priest running towards you, u are expecting him to fear of course, wait for him to get close enough, and Ward yourself. Never use it before arena start, because it will get dispelled as soon as u enter combat. Useful against lock fear as well, if u get caught in the open, Ward yourself on his Fear cast, and run out of LoS ASAP, as it doesnt trigger diminishing return and u will get full feared anyways.

*Penance self macro
/cast [target=charname] Penance
This will ease your life when you need to heal yourself, but you dont want to lose your current target. You can even forgt to change target sometimes and u will either heal wrong one, or do dmg. In some situations , gamechanging.

*Mass dispell macro
/cast !Mass Dispel

It will let you spam your MD keybind without losing green circle until you cast it. When entering arena against rogue, i usually mountup , rush to somewhere around the middle of the arena, and spam couple mass dispells in different directions. If u hit rogue with it he wont be able to sap you, which means you screwed his opener instantly, BUT, if he chooses to sap your team mate, you will die or at least blow couple cooldowns. Be careful!

*Dispel party member / focus target
/cast [target=focus] DIspel magic
/cast [target=party1] Dispel magic
Bread and butter for any priest... My finger used to hurt after some arenas... especially against resto druids :>

*Petmacro
/cast Shadowfiend
/petattack

I recommend using this one, since sometimes your pet will not attack target automatically, then you have to click on his bar, etc etc... This is the faster way, tap twice, and get ur mana back, simple as that. If playing against warrior, Fear Ward pet so he doesnt fear it instantly...

Classes that work best with disco are :
-Rogue Sub/Assa
-Warrior Arms
-Feral Druid
-Death knight UH
-Frost Mage
-MM hunter

With this i can conclude my very first guide, based on theoretical knowledge about discipline priest. Mechanicaly, I am not that good, Im improving alot with each game whatsoever.
If i missed anything feel free to leave comment. Also, the guide is not very colorful, and that might change if i manage to get some free time.
Thank you for reading, i hope you enjoyed! CHEERS!

Playing 2s without Inner Focus and especially playing wihtout Blessed Recovery is not a good idea.
Since majority of 2s teams on TW have warrs/dks you should always have atleast 1 point in blessed recovery imo.
As far as capping hit rating, it is a must when playing with mage/rogue but when you are playing with warrior/dk in your team you dont acutally need any hit rating.
You should also have mentioned that disc works really well with ele shamans in 2s.
But anyway its not a bad guide overall.
Also if you are interested in studying more about best stats/gear sets for priest check this video out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRzdTaByrpY

Hey man, thanks for feedback, i really appreciate it. I wrote this guide in roughly 4 hours, and probably missed a thing here and there, like that about ele shamans... How in a world could i forget that lol, i loved playing with ele! So much fun there :D Even tho i would make alot different spec/gear setup for that combo its really fun to play. About Blessed Recovery, yea its true it is a must for Truewow. And i used before, if i remember right, i used 3 pts in Holy Specialization 2 pts in Inspiration and 3 in Blessed Recovery...As i mentioned before, specs are highly adjustable, and can be adapted for anyones needs. Once again, thanks for feedback! :D

Also I didnt notice until now you mentioned you dont take glyph of pain suppression and prefer inner fire.
Dont know what is your reason for not using it but imo its a rly good glyph, helps a lot in situations when playing vs rogues or pala/wars.

I didnt say i dont use it, i do actually use it over Inner Fire. I suggested a couple glyphs, but my personal choice is PS>Penance>PWS. I might have misstold what i actually wanted to say, however i will go through it again tomorrow to check it out, or when there is enough feedback to actually edit whole guide. :)

Well, we are all here to play, and enjoy the game in a first place aint we ? So why not share anything that can be a bit helpful to at least one person? In my opinion, there is no such a thing as a complete guide, but sharing personal knowledge and experiences and making people read them, can help ALOT! I know that also from my personal exp. It has happend dozens of times to me to remember something i read/watched on the internet, or even what somebody told me, in the middle of arena, and just that little bit of someones help won that same game for me :D
Thanks alot man, i really appreciate it :)
