pvp/pve spec question

#1 » Post by Torie » 23 Dec 2012 10:38

First off, I just had my mage transferred here thanks to Cover25!

I have not played on my mage since well before the release of Wotlk on retail servers. I remember in some patches in the later part of TBC era that arcane mage was the thing to be for both pve/pvp. Since the release of WotlK I have not kept up with it sadly.
So, my question is, what is the best spec for PvE? and PvP?
I was always a fire mage in TBC. Since I haven't played mage in so long, should be rather easy to learn any spec I think.
Thank you for any input!

Well my knowledge with Mages isn't that ample. But I'd say Arcane PvE to begin with, then Fire PvE with endgame gear. For PvP, Arcane is bursty but dies fast. I prefer Frost or Fire for PvP since they have a good sustain and a lot of CCs. And apparently Fire is harder than Frost, but deadlier if well mastered.

I tried frost yesterday for a good while. I was out leveling (Keeblar is a 70) and I just wasn't happy, it was taken far to long to kill mobs.
I switched to Fire. Mobs get 2-3 shotted. But Keeblar has tbc raid gear on. It greatly speeded up my leveling. I do like frost, but it's just not working for me, I don't think it likes me :(

I like Fire the most, because rare are the Fire mages :P

It was my very first character, and you do have to overlook the mistakes I made with her gear. The last time I played on her was about 6 months before the release of Wotlk. I was like... 10 or maybe 11 years old so...yeah like... don't look at gems... or enchants... gahh

and my pally tank, I logged on her later during wotlk and added a few gems just to see how high I could get her hp.

I'd say go arcane all the way. It's so versatile. You can put out some nice DPS in PvE and still pwn in PvP with the same exact spec.
Ever get stuck not knowing how to play free WoW? Well have no fear, just go here and download the game completely free (it's safe, even I use it). Once you do so, you will need to change your realmlist. You can do this by opening the WoW directory and navigating to (Data>EnUs>) open up realmlist.wtf with notepad and change it to

Code: Select all

Set Realmlist login.truewow.org
Congratulations!
Now you can run WoW.exe and login with your account name and password on our server

On a side-note, if you are having issues accessing TPB you can use an alternate proxie in this list.

Arcane is borning, and it's all about peak dps. In fights where you move your dps will be crippled. At that, you do help the raid (3% damage increase). I'd honestly say go fire as it's more fun than AB AB AB AB AB AB CDS+AM AB AB AB AB A BA B AB AM A BA AB AB AB AB BA BA B AM

Arcane is pretty much the go-to spec if you're undergeared, fresh off the block or rusty. Its not as fun as Fireball/Frostfire Bolt, but it is a punisher at lower gear levels. Fire loves ciritcal strikes and both Fire specs overtake Arc at higher gear levels due to the larger amount of spell crit available to the said mage.
If you're alliance, bug Linara for some tips. He's usually jumping around in Dala on his Deathcharger and Tiny Potions like he has a sugar rush or something.

Lol. So true. I've been leveling in Fire, and found that I do pretty nice bursting damage, especially with the Fire Streak procs. On level 70 I managed to get 1200DPS single target, so Fire IS indeed good. Never bothered with Arcane, don't like it ^^
