Well, the first post should've been 0. When you count '1' you're just saying that you finished counting '0', which is the actual starting point. 1 is just the number that follows it. Counts don't start from [1] - 1,1 - 1,2 - ... [2] - 2,1 - etc, They start from [0] - 0,1 - 0,2 - ... [1) - 1,1 - 1,2 - etc... In resume, the first integer comes from 0 to 1 and not from 1 to 2.

There's a difference between ordinal and cardinal numbers. The first one is used for order (where are you at the count to 1 million?) and the second is used for size (what is the amount of posts?). The number of the posts are not displaying the position of the post but the amount of them. The post number 0 is 0 because it is the post that created the topic, it is the starter point, and the starter point in a cardinal count is 0.
To make it simple: the post number is just showing the number of replies.
