Laptop suggestion.

#1 » Post by Justicelight » 14 Sep 2016 01:40

Hey, looking forward to buy a laptop, and planning to use it as a desktop at home (connect it to keyboard, mouse, speakers, tv).

First I need some suggestions of what should I buy, if you have any specific model in mind.

Here are some requirements:

CPU: i need a fast one since I might work with modeling software but also play some recent games (maybe at minimum level of details).
Battery: I don`t care, I can plug it anytime, but it will be nice to let me stay unplugged atleast 1 hour for some uni presentations.
HDD: maximum 1 TB, either something replaceable in near future, or something with high performance that can last for atleast 4 years.
Graphic card: tied to CPU information.
RAM: tied to CPU and Graphic card information.
Size: size doesn't matter, minimum would be 15.6 (numerical keyboard is a must).
Special features: if any laptop has a special feature this would be the priority that I aim for Lighted Keyboard> Touchscreen> Backflip display> Detachable display.
Price: maximum 900 euro.

I found this one so far: http://www.lefdal.com/product/data/barb ... cgodjTwM0Q

PS: might also use it for streaming games.

Thanks, let me know some questions.

Hey justice, iv absolutely zero idea what anything on that link is xD i don't speak that language but.

Don't buy lenovo, they are massively overpriced for what you get, you can get better hardware for same price, the reason why lenovo is higher price is because it's a mainstream shop brand that buy's parts and assembles them into something that is out there in every shop, you'd be much better off with a MSI gaming laptop or something because afterall MSI build's hardware they are build very well. Lenovo buy's the parts and assembles them the cheapest way but advertises them more hence the higher price.

Now the GPU, If you want uber FPS and Gwaphics, make sure it has some sort of extra GPU like a Nvidia / AMD (Ati) GPU, don't go for a laptop with integrated intel graphics if you plan on running games, because a integrated graphics is basically just your CPU (processor) also doing graphics whilst running the game, which ofc will never do the job as good as a GPU working with a CPU.

Base your GPU off of a chart like this, here are 2016 Nvidia GPU's for laptops: http://pc4u.org/nvidia-geforce-gtx-980m ... omparison/

But im sure you prob's knew all that already, But my advice is definately definately buy something like a MSI laptop, will last longer, better cooling, faster, just better than something like a Lenovo. But with that said, a Lenovo will do the job, but it's more of a mainstream laptop for the people that just want a laptop and want it for regular things, work, facebook etc maybe to watch a DVD or play some games, Not for full time gaming usage.

Also, Most MSI laptops come with a SSD + HDD, usually like a 128GB SSD with your windows installed on it, and a 1-2tb HDD for data, so you can easily put your WoW folder on your SSD also, With a SSD your laptop from pressing power button when it was fully shut down, it will be on your desktop in sub 15s or so, and WoW will be open fully loaded in less than 3s.

A friend of mine recently bought a MSI gaming laptop after 8 years of Lenovo, they now understand the difference between a machine build to do everything as good as possible vs something everybody has like a mainstream Lenovo ^_^

Also incase your interested, heres my computer i build:

IF you want to work with modeling programs ( like CAD, Cinema 4D, Rhinoceros 5.0, Blender and so on )
CPU : search for CPU with more cores and the higher the clock speed .... Basic speed is more important than CPU speed in turbo mode, CPU cache is important too - more cache memory = better
HDD: 1TB hdd are slow for this kind of work, search for SSD or at least 7200rpn hdd ( faster HDD with lesser capacity is better, minimum is lets say 200 GB )
GPU: This shit handles the visual display of the model, but basic is something like, large models = more graphic card memory you need. So lets say graphic cards with 2GB and more memory. You have Direct X and Open GL cards, There was some difference between them, dont remember it, you can ask uncle Google always :D
RAM: 8GB is minimum but you will need more ( trust me ) , go for 16GB +
Dispaly: you need high resolution ( dont buy model with 1366x768 resolution, that sucks )

Edit :
You need something like http://www.pcgarage.ro/notebook-laptop/ ... in-10-pro/ but meh its a bit out of your price limit :D

Thanks everyone.

I guess I cant get it all with that maximum price.

The idea of having a laptop is because I want to make two docking stations (multiple display, keyboard, mouse, speakers..etc): one at home and one at work. So with this, I`ll be able to move my laptop between work and home, going to some meetings with laptop while enjoying some "desktop like" or close to it experience.

My current laptop is MSI CX620, and I have it for 6 years already. It's time for an upgrade !

Also, can you guy lead me to some desktop configuration that can match the performance of a maximum 900euro laptop? I might get a laptop from uni, to roam around with it, and focus my cash on building a desktop :D.

Had to log after I've seen that lenovo is "massively overpriced".

We are in 2016 now, so I don't think there is company which would risk building their laptop from lower quality parts. Lenovo has most of the times cheaper gaming laptops than Asus, Msi or Dell(Alienware) just because their brand is not known in this regard. They are known for making 2 in 1, office-like and professional notebooks mainly.
But this depends also on the shop you are buying the laptop from, and also the country you live in.

At the moment there is no need to have discussion about the cooling system, fan noise, battey life or something similar until you choose some model. Each of them is different in this regard.

In this price range you should look for decent i7 (not U-version) and gtx 960m with at least 8gb of ram, if possible. If there would be also added an ssd, that would be great as well, if no, you can always buy one later, as well as upgrade your ram, if needed.

Anyway, I did a quick search and these are the models I've found in my country. I upped the limit to 1000€, because couldn't really find an i7+960m laptop under 900€.

[hide]These are the models:
https://www.alza.sk/dell-inspiron-15-70 ... d=18848814
https://www.alza.sk/lenovo-ideapad-y50- ... d=18848814
https://www.alza.sk/msi-gl62-6qf-1098cz ... d=18848814
http://www.tpd.sk/katalog/pocitace-a-pr ... tail=56747
http://www.lenovoonline.sk/lenovo-ideap ... ack-p23171[/hide]

Some of the info is in Slovak, but you can get the basic idea from the specs which are provided there. You can google these models to see how much they cost in your country, and be sure to check as many e-shops as possible, because you might find different prices/sales.

I personally would go for the Lenovo IdeaPad Y50-70 Black or the Dell model, because of their 4GB Vram. However the Lenovo's model has 4k screen, so you should check, if there is one with FHD screen in your country. (It's not being sold in Slovakia anymore).

//that's my opinion.

From laptops, close to your requirements are :
  • ASUS ROG G552VW series
  • Lenovo IdeaPad Y700 series
  • MSI GP72 6QF series ( or only MSI GP72, no idea lol )
  • Dell Inspiron 15 (7000) series
  • Acer Aspire V15 Nitro series
but prices are always around 1ooo euros and more ( in my opinion those plus/minus 100-300 euros, just w8 few more months and you will get what you want ... cca :D )
and try to PM or contact @Boxis, he has a lot experience with this things

I would not absolutely agree to what you said since its not CPU that runs graphics. Alongside CPU there is GPU on same die that does runs graphics.
Image

Anyway, l agree that Lenovo is not something that should be looked at as well as Acer and Dell (Dell does have good machines but if something goes bad....ooooh boy).

JL from what you said, you need Intel processor with 4 cores (maybe even 2 cores with hyperthreading) which means one of i7 or higher i5 processors. Now Intel started releasing its latest generation of CPUs but non of still released is suiting you. Take a look at lists from two previous generations of CPUs:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skylake_( ... processors
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadwell ... processors

Note that every of those CPUs have GPU on itself but as others told you, you would prefer to have additional GPU. l have no idea how does 500e+ market is going on so l cant recommend you anything.

In your job SSD is a must, so if some Laptop have SSD of at least 120GB along its HDD, its good for you. However, note that HDD and SSD both fit in same bay so if you buy LT with HDD only, you could replace it with SSD and put HDD in rack and use it as External. Also note that there is specially designed slot on most Laptops called M.2 which can be used to plug in special M.2 standard SSDs, so you could have both of them.

In short, l cant help you anything apart from Asus>HP>MSI.

As an owner of a Lenovo Y50 laptop for 2 years now, I'd say it's well worth it. It's got the specs to run most titles on high settings easily and it handles WoW on Ultra settings without even breaking a sweat (mine stays at 65-68C while in Dalaran and around 70-72C in ICC). It can handle running titles like Skyrim / Subnautica / War Thunder / GTA 5 / Battlefield / etc on high settings too.

Mine has a GTX 860M with 4 GB dedicated memory (that was the top available GPU in July 2014) + 16 GB RAM + an i7 CPU (i7 4710HQ @ 2.5 GHZ) and a 1 TB HDD - all running on Windows 8.1. It came with an external optical drive / 5 button mouse / backlit keyboard and a free Coolermaster X3 cooling pad included in my purchase.

I don't know if this model is still available but I'd totally recommend it as Lenovo's customer support has not let me down even once thanks to the 5 year warranty that came with mine (free parts and servicing for the entire thing all the way to my house xD). I couldn't be happier about this purchase and wish I chose Lenovo earlier after putting up with HP's nonsense for years lol.

My advice would be: Don't.

Get a cheap-ass laptop for your travelling requirements. Get a proper desktop for home. You'll get way more bang-for-buck that way

It's what I've done so far and has allowed me to get a sweet gaming rig at home in a country where all tech products cost 30% more than EU or the States.

I plan on getting a gaming laptop only now because I want to use it for LANs and work alike.
