[Pending] Allow Character Copy from TW/PW to PTR

#1 » Post by mcheka » 19 May 2016 17:17

If we had a website feature that allowed a full database copy of our TrueWoW/PrimalWoW characters to the PTR, it would make testing certain things easier.

By lowering the startup cost of having to create new characters, and having to add items, spells, levels, enchants, gems, etc to their characters, we might have more people using the PTR and therefore testing more things.

Doubt people would test more things tbf, it'd just increase the number of people testing builds, gear, gems, whatever. Most things can be tested without having a full geared character.

Idk, it's a good idea just sounds like overkill to me

Well bad points about this as Nyeriah said people will just end up using ptr to test personnal stuff to increase damage output like gems, glyphs and other consumable item so they dont have to spend gold or using materials on live realm to experiment with their character(s).

On the other had not giving instant 80 on ptr also has advantages since level cap is different on primal/truewow so copying character would allow cotent to be tested with character of correct max level for realm they play on or testing damage output on different classes of max level on ptr to decide which class to level on tw.

Having people test their personal stuff also doesnt seem like a terrible thing. It would probably just increase player quality. I like this idea, I would probably use PTR more often for both personal stuff and testing.
I don't know how hard it is to implement something like this. If it is indeed difficult it's not really worth it though. However if it's an easy feature that won't give too much work to implement it certainly has its benefits for both tw and pw.

+1 from me.

Also is there a post where you can find the commands to do certain things on PTR as GM. I have never been in contact with gm commands so that is what's stopping me from testing on PTR.

The PTR isn't supposed to be a sandbox mode for people to test their gear, encounter tactic, etc. It's supposed to be utilised to test if our content works as intended and to find possible bugs. You have your GM commands, which is more than enough to test this without gear. It's a reason access to it was limited to only the testers in the past.

This is something I could setup eventually, a guide or likewise. For now, your docs would be https://truewow.org/admin-permissions?permission=6 :)

This is something being worked at. More information regarding on the system itself will be released in due time. Until then, patience is the key my friends!

As this isn't in "Pending" or "Accepted" yet, I'm leaving my +1. I wanted this the other week to test Warlock pets. I ended up through trial-and-error getting some skills setup, but it would have been easier to just use my main, fly to areas I wanted to test, and write a proper report.
