Applying the pre-patch at the start of the new year is completely nonsensical when Naxx is not even fully released at that point in time.

Well, because there should be no free transfer (I believe you are referring to the free faction transfer in the shop). Someone did not remove it from the list as it has expired a few weeks ago.
